Secret Life of an Old-School New York Bookie

Are you a gambling man?” Vera asks me. She hands an envelope to a bartender in the Meatpacking District because she sips on a whiskey and ginger ale. The envelope contains money for one. Vera’s a bookie and also a runner, and to be apparent, Vera’s not her name.
She is a small-time bookie, or a bookmaker, a person who takes stakes and makes commission off them. She publications football tickets and collects them out of pubs, theater stagehands, employees at job sites, and sometimes building supers. Printed on the tickets that are the size of a supermarket are spreads for college football and NFL games. At precisely the exact same time, she is a”runner,” another slang term to describe someone who delivers cash or spread numbers to some boss. Typically bookies are men, not women, and it is as though she is on the pursuit for new blood, looking for young gamblers to enlist. The newspaper world of soccer betting has sunk in the surface of the exceptionally popular, embattled daily dream sites like FanDuel or even DraftKings.
“Business is down due to FanDuel, DraftKings,” Vera says. “Guy bet $32 and won 2 million. That is a load of shit. I want to meet him.” There’s a nostalgic feel to circling the amounts of a soccer spread. The tickets have what look like traces of rust on the borders. The college season has finished, and she did not do that bad this season, Vera states. What’s left, however, are swimming pool bets for the Super Bowl.
Vera started running back numbers when she was two years old in a snack bar where she was employed as a waitress. The chef called on a telephone in the hallway and she’d deliver his stakes to bookies for horse races. It leant an allure of young defiance. The same was true when she bartended in the’80s. “Jimmy said in the beginning,’I’m going to use you. Just so that you know,”’ she says, remembering a deceased boss. “`You go into the pub, bullshit with the boys. You’re able to talk football with a man, you are able to pull them , and then they are yours. ”’ Jimmy died of a brain hemorrhage. Her second boss died of brain cancer. Vera says she overcome breast cancer , although she smokes. She failed radioactive therapy and refused chemo.
Dead managers left behind clients to conduct and she’d oversee them. Other runners despised her in the beginning. They couldn’t understand why she’d have more clientele . “And they’d say,’who the fuck is the donkey, coming here carrying my job? ”’ she states like the men are throwing their dead weight around. On occasion the other runners duped her, for example a runner we will call”Tommy” kept winnings that he was supposed to hand off to her . “Tommy liked to place coke up his nose, and play cards, and he enjoyed the women in Atlantic City. He’d go and provide Sam $7,000 and fuck off using another $3,000. He informs the supervisor,’Go tell the broad.’ And I says, ‘Fuck you. It’s like I’m just a fucking broad to you. I don’t count. ”’ It’s of course forbidden for a runner to devote cash or winnings intended for customers on private vices. But fellow runners and gaming policemen trust her. She never speaks bad about them, their characters, winnings, or names. She never whines if she does not make commission. She says she could”keep her mouth closed” that is why she’s be a runner for nearly 25 decades.
When she pays clients, she exchanges in person, never leaving envelopes of money behind bathrooms or under sinks in tavern bathrooms. Over time, though, she has lost around $25,000 from guys not paying their losses. “There is a lot of losers out there,” she explained,”just brazen.” For the soccer tickets, she funds her very own”bank” that is self-generated, nearly informally, by building her value on the achievement of the school year’s first couple of weeks of stakes in the autumn.
“I ain’t giving you no more amounts,” Vera states and drinks from her black stripes. Ice cubes turn the whiskey to a lighter tan. She reaches her cigarettes and zips her coat. She questions the current alterations in the spread with this weekend’s Super Bowl between the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos and squints at her drink and overlooks the bartender. Her movements timber, as her thoughts do. The favorability of the Panthers has changed from three to four four-and-a-half to five quickly in the last week. She needs the Panthers to win by six or seven in order for her wager for a victory, and predicts Cam Newton will lead them to some double-digit triumph over Peyton Manning.
Outside, she lights a cigarette before moving to some other bar. Someone she didn’t want to see had sat down in the first one. She says there is a guy there who tends to harass her. She continues further north.
In the next bar, a poster tacked to the wall past the counter shows a 100-square Super Bowl grid or”boxes.” “Are you running any Super Bowls?” Vera asks.
To win a Super Bowl box, in the conclusion of every quarter, the final digit of the teams’ scores need to match the number of your selected box in the grid. The bartender hands Vera the grid. The pub lights brighten. Vera traces her finger throughout its outline, explaining that when the score is Broncos, 24, and Panthers, 27, from the third quarter, that is row 4 and column 7. Prize money changes each quarter, along with the pool only works properly if pub patrons buy out all the squares.
Vera remembers a pool in 1990, the Giants-Buffalo Super Bowl XXV. Buffalo lost 19 to 20 after missing a field goal from 47 yards. All the Bills knelt and prayed for this field goal. “Cops in the 20th Precinct won. It was 0 9,” she says, describing the box numbers that matched 0 and 9. But her deceased boss wasted the $50,000 pool over the course of this entire year, spending it on lease, gas and smokes. Bettors had paid payments throughout the entire year for $500 boxes. Nobody got paid. There was a”contract on his life.”
The bartender stows a white envelope of cash before pouring an apricot-honey mix for Jell-O shots. Vera rolls up a napkin and twists it into a beer which looks flat to give it foam.
“For the very first bookie I worked for, my name was’Ice,’ long until Ice-T,” she says, holding out her hands, rubbing where the ring with her codename would match. “He got me a ring, which I dropped. Twenty-one diamonds, made’ICE. ”’ The bookie told her he had it inscribed ICE because she had been”a cold-hearted bitch.”

The course of 2019 of england can mimic the personalities of 2003 and raise the World Cup, says defence coach John Mitchell.
England were knocked out at the group phase as hosts four decades back, having exited from the quarter-finals at New Zealand in 2011.
“We can win it, most definitely. That’s the exciting thing,” said Mitchell.
“We might need to stay focused and ensure we do not get diverted at any stage. We are going to require just a tiny bit of luck and we’ll have to keep healthier.”
England begin their campaign against Tonga in Sapporo next Sunday (11:15 BST) and then meet the USA the next Thursday, prior to the stiffer tests of Argentina and France finish their group fixtures.
“Some players might need to step up. You see that at other World Cups historically – they ask questions of players that probably did not anticipate they were going get as much playing time.,” added Mitchell.
“But it’s amazing this championship does in relation to attracting more from players. You have to contact your mates, so you need to trust your mates, and do not fear making a mistake”
Should Eddie Jones’ side Group C that they might fulfill with Australia or Wales from the quarter-finals, both of whom beat on them in 2015 at the group point.
Hooker Jamie George is taking inspiration in the sole Englishman to lift the World Cup.
“I saw a movie the other day on societal media of Martin Johnson following the 2003 closing that people have not seen very much,” George told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“It was a remarkably humble interview. He was talking about all of the personnel, the gamers who had got them to that location.
“I simply thought to myself’What an unbelievable leader.’ And then, what an unbelievable position to maintain.
“It got the juices flowing. It provides you goose-bumps only thinking about it.
“We’re ultimately in Japan and it is almost slightly surreal. However, you dream about such things; you dream of World Cups.
“There’s a real belief in the group that we’re able to take action. We’re also aware that it is going to take a lot for us to arrive. I’m unbelievably confident we are in a place that is brilliant.
“I really don’t believe many countries in the world can say they’ve got the depth we have.”
New Zealander Mitchell, who helped capture the usa through eligibility with this tournament and coached the All Blacks into the semi-finals in 2003, believes now will be begun by his fees again.
“New Zealand are world champions and they have had some recent form also,” he said.
“They’ll prefer the terms also because it is going to suit their style of soccer – they prefer to move it about, they’re possibly the very best catch-pass team in the competition so that I would provide them a terrific opportunity.
“You have then obtained Ireland and Wales who have had really good success over the last couple of decades. And I wouldn’t dismiss the Springboks – that they seem very powerful.”
New Zealand meet South Africa on Saturday (10:45) in possibly the greatest game of the opening weekend. Both nations having won five World Cups between them.

From Emlyn Begley
BBC Sport
Real Madrid battled back from 2-0 down to draw Club Bruges on a different Champions League night to the champions.
2 eccentric goals from Emmanuel Dennis were weak again and almost undid zinedine Zidanes side.
The Nigerians initially arrived since he miscontrolled Percy Taus cross and to the net – originally disallowed for offside but awarded after a lengthy assistant referee delay.
Dennis stumbled to the box and chipped Courtois – that Alphonse Areola at half-time replaced – despite losing his footing.
Captain Sergio Ramos responded for Real in the second half with a header in Karim Benzemas cross, which was ruled out for offside but overturned by the VAR.
Toni Kroos spanned for Casemiro to head in the equaliser from the, Following Bruges captain Ruud Vormer was sent off for two reservations.
Actual – beaten 3-0 from Paris St-Germain in their opening match – remain bottom of Group A.
The very first spell as Real Madrid boss of zidane was that the stuff of legend. They won three Champions League names in charge in both and a half decades and then he left to the ultimate high.
But he was back, replacing Santiago Solari after their Bernabeu defeat.
The comeback against Bruges ensured it was not a third successive Champions League defeat along with a third European home loss in a row.
Theyve surrendered a couple of goals by half-time in their three home Champions League games. They had done two in their previous 124.
La Liga leaders Real created plenty of chances but fluffed their lines.
Bruges, that are top of the league, looked in control after Dennis targets – particularly his first, although he tried to control a cross but kicked at the ball into the internet.
It may have been before Actual fought through Casemiro and Ramos over if Areola not well preserved a opportunity to get a hat-trick game.
Captain Ramos was acting as a centre forward but Bruges stoppage-time replacement Siebe Schrijvers squandered a glorious chance when he screwed wide with his only signature.
In the last whistle, Bruges celebrated a point despite the hosts comeback while Real looked dejected.
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane:The two aims that they scored were a joke – thats all I will say on that.
What occurred in the first half can occur to you. We seemed to take the 3 things from begin to finish which was impossible from the first half. We won the second half 2-0 and we all wind up taking a stage.
Im not stressed. We all know we must make and complete opportunities because in the first 10 minutes. If wed been a little more clinical, we could have experienced the opening goal.
We need to do that at home – go to kill the sport from minute one and push our rivals.
I dont wish to talk ill of a rival, however when we pressed such as we did in the second half, theyd have had no opportunity.

Three College Football Head Coaches on the Hot Seat in Week 3

It’s the unfortunate part of school soccer. There has to be groups that shed. When that occurs, from beginning roles to head coaching hires, everything is placed into question. There are loads of questions after Week 2, and it seems that some may be answered sooner rather than later.
Which Power 5 head coaches are on the hot seat after two matches? Here’s a quick list of the best three.
Willie Taggart was on the hot seat after just 1 season with Florida State, to allow him to make a change that year, but fans remained hopeful. That expansion hasn’t been clear. Their first match was a loss to Boise State, that was poor enough. Though they won at Week 2, they did not look good whatsoever. Obviously, Florida State shouldn’t require a missed extra point in overtime to beat Louisiana-Monroe.
It is this easy: Florida State includes a regular, also Willie Taggart isn’t meeting with that standard. They are a premiere coaching destination due to their heritage. They need to be able to find a head trainer compared to Willie Taggart. In order to be in the forefront of their coaching carousel I will see them firing Taggart prior to the conclusion of the year.
Another team which should hive expectations, UCLA is now 3-11 within their first 14 games of their Chip Kelly era. There should be at least a possibility for UCLA to compete, With no Pac-12 team running away with the seminar. That is not the case with this coaching staff. Kelly could be on his way out before November, with their schedule getting harder.
Their backs are against the wall, although There’s still time for all those coaches to flip things around. It’s never or now at their jobs, and they are currently trending towards never. Maybe they can shock us , however, I wouldn’t expect it to be the circumstance.

Point/Counterpoint: Notre Dame vs Louisville – Free NCAAF Betting Picks

Notre Dame (9) vs Louisville
Monday, September 2 nd, 8:00 PM in Cardinal Stadium
Swinging Johnson: This week Doug Upstone and render our school football selections on the Monday night game between the Louisville Cardinals and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and I shall deviate to dip our toes.
It will probably be the very first and only time this season we do so, as the previous week of exhibition NFL soccer is somewhat lackluster in comparison to a regular-season game of NCAA football comprising one of the top teams in the nation, plus a legendary football program to boot, Notre Dame.
Without further ado, lets begin the debate after my friend Doug Upstone got the better of me last week while I endorsed the Titans. Weve been swapping wins forth and back so it appears like its my turn to get the wreath, as I heartily endorse the Irish and will accompany each of the squares laying the lumber on a street favorite.
After reviewing the school soccer odds almost six days before the Monday night affair, I see the lineup has spiked a half-point on the favorite, starting at Notre Dame -19 1/2 to where it is now offered at a solid -20 across the board at all the best internet sportsbooks.
I enjoy the Irish but youre leaning in this clash onto the Cardinals. Aside from the place do you think Louisville will hang with the boys?
Doug Upstone: YesSwinger, at least and a win IMO, it said a great deal about the management of the Steelers and Titans. Lets move to football, where the games count and so will our records with this one.
Recall those Thursday night matches Louisville utilized to perform against opponents? They held their own and engineered upsets. These were enjoyable games to watch and the Cardinals were a thrilling golf club.
However, such as the former Papa Johns Stadium as well as its phony (in real life) owner, Louisville football last year was worse than the usual three-day-old pizza.
Scott Satterfield will be out win matches and to change the culture and worked miracles at Appalachian State. This wont happen right away as the ability level is down in theVille. Yet this is a significant time for Louisville, a group that has the chance to start taking actions.
Ive read where the Cards trainers have popped up the slow mechanisms of QB Jawon Pass (good name for a QB) and that I like Hassan Hall as the lead running back. Than using a ticket for the Colts at OVER 9 for season 23, the protection, well, that makes me more nervous. You have your Irish up, please do tell.
Swinging Johnson: The Cardinals wont be doing much since the Notre Dame defense will keep them cozy in their nest flying in this game. Scott Satterfield is presently in the big leagues and hes got a group last year, where they went winless coming off of a dismal record. This rebuild is akin to trying to turn it and taking a hot air balloon.
While that may eventually occur, the problem is that Louisville is confronting a group which made it to the CFP this past year and owned only one of the stingiest defenses in all of college football, surrendering just 17.2 points within the regular season and going a perfect 12-0 till they fulfilled Clemson in the CFP semifinals. The offense was clicking on all cylinders averaging over 33 points per game.
My issue is, just how will be a quarterback like Pass who is slow to release, supposed to gain any traction against a Irish shield? Especially when hes working with a new trainer and an offensive strategy that is entirely new?
Please, Doug, save me I am lost! I find no way, shape or form where Louisville is going to have the ability to keep pace and I am desperate to the sage wisdom and prodigious handicapping expertise!
Doug Upstone: Well, Swinger, I am happy to read in your last sentence you are coming over to the bright side of sports gambling, or youre just being the same wise a** you are. Ill allow the SBR readers who are currently making college football picks decide on that. Im the first to realize Louisville was 1-11 ATS, although not just 2-10 and completely sucked last year.
Just like he gave up around the Atlanta Falcons However, coach Bobby Petrino was given up on by that staff COMPLETELY. A new trainer brings a new attitude and his team will be sold by Satterfield on creating a statement with this being a federal match. Louisville does have to trust not and the Irish will take them have a lot of fight.
Lets also consider, Brian Kelly using gold and the blue is ATS as a road favorite, also a ATS if dishing out more or 20 digits. This defense you said may improve as the season progresses but replacing five starters, when you dont/cant recruit like Clemson or even Bama, it is going to take time.
Swinging Johnson: Well Doug, I was a bit facetious because though you have an impressive handicapping restart, then you miss the mark from time to time. And in this circumstance, you happen to be shooting blanks because Louisville might be better compared to last year but Id submit that they are coached with a Rhesus monkey and improve upon their own record made by an incompetent coach like Petrino.
I understand that laying nearly 3 touchdowns on the street is square biz for sure and Joe Q. Public never got rich by betting the heavy road chalk, but on occasion the public is right, and in this case they are. Until next week once we get back on our NFL Game of the Week, lets see what happens on Monday night once the Irish come ready to squint at Louisville.
Free College Football Pick: Swinging Johnson — Notre Dame -20 (-110)
Free College Football Pick: Doug Upstone — Louisville +20 (-110)

Cooper Kupp happy brother Ketner is with Rams

With sibling trios like Edmunds and the Watts, brothers over the NFL ranks may seem a bit more prevalent than they truly are.
Having family members making it all the way to the NFL is a rare occurrence. Having a set of brothers on precisely the same group is even more uncommon.
So, as the comeback road is traveled by Rams receiver Cooper Kupp he’s pleased to have younger brother Ketner, a linebacker in Los Angeles.

“It’s so much fun, so much fun,” Cooper, 26, told Myles Simmons of TheRams.com. “We’ve had only a few times where I’ve needed to block him on protection — sort of a throwback to our college days when we are doing this.”
Eastern Washington was attended by the Kupp brothers, with Cooper from Ketner’s tenure and 2014-2016 going from 2015-2018 playing there. Cooper was a 2017 pick by the Rams, who signed up Ketner as a undrafted free agent in May.
The two have been together for Rams offseason clinics and are currently preparing for training camp.
While Cooper’s looking to find his way back and reestablishing himself as among the burgeoning receiving abilities of the league, Ketner’s just hoping to get a roster spot.
In any event, it has been a fantastic time for its Kupp brothers.
“He eats a great deal of my food at my house, sleeps on my sofa almost every night,” Cooper stated. “It is so much pleasure — complete blessing. Whenever you’re in a position also have family as far as we can and to be at this point in your life around family, I don’t take that for granted at all. It’s an incredible adventure and blessing for us.”

While that may eventually happen, the problem is that Louisville is facing a group which made it to the CFP this past year and owned one of the stingiest defenses in all of college football, devoting only 17.2 points within the regular season and moving a perfect 12-0 till they met Clemson in the CFP semifinals. The offense was clicking on all cylinders averaging 33 points per game over.
My query is, just how is a quarterback like Pass whos slow to discharge, designed to gain some traction against a defense that is Irish? Especially when hes working with a new coach and an offensive scheme that is entirely new?
Please, Doug, rescue me I am lost! I see no way, shape or form in which Louisville is going to have the ability to keep up and I am desperate for your sage wisdom and prodigious handicapping expertise!
Doug Upstone: Well, Swinger, I am glad to see in your last sentence you are coming around to the bright side of sports betting, or you are simply being the same wise a** you are. I will allow the SBR readers that are making that is decided on by college football selections. I am the first to understand Louisville completely sucked and was, however, 1-11 ATS final season.
But that team COMPLETELY gave up on coach Bobby Petrino, like he gave up around the Atlanta Falcons. A coach brings a fresh mindset on building a statement, and this being a federal game, his team will be sold by Satterfield. Louisville does need to hope the Irish will take them for granted and never have much fight.
Let us also consider, Brian Kelly with the gold and blue is ATS as a road favorite, also a ATS if dishing out more or 20 digits. This defense you said might improve as the season progresses but replacing five starters, even whenever you dont/cant amuse like Clemson or even Bama, it will take time.
Swinging Johnson: Well Doug, I was becoming a bit facetious because though youve got an handicapping that was impressive resume, then you miss the mark from time to time. And in this circumstance, because Louisville might be greater compared to last year but I would submit that they are trained by a Rhesus monkey and enhance upon their document rendered by an awkward trainer such as Petrino, you happen to be shooting blanks.
I know that laying nearly 3 touchdowns on the road is square biz for sure and Joe Q. Public never got rich by gambling the heavy road chalk, but sometimes the general public is correct, and also in this case they definitely are. Until when we get down on our NFL Game of the Week, next week, lets see what happens on Monday when the Irish come ready to rumble in Louisville.
Free College Football Pick: Swinging Johnson — Notre Dame -20 (-110)
Free College Football Pick: Doug Upstone — Louisville +20 (-110)
