Dalilah Muhammad and eliud Kipchoge happen to be named World Athletics female and male athletes throughout the year.
Before becoming the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours, 35, kenyas Kipchoge, won the London Marathon for a period in April.
He also covered the 26.2 miles (42.2km) in 1 hour 59 minutes 40 seconds from the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in October.
Muhammad, 29, won World Championship 400m hurdles gold in Doha having twice broken the world record this year.
The American, who won the Olympic title at Rio 2016, said:It has been an amazing year. Its been a year but I am so thankful. I never imagined ending this year like this.
Kipchoge, who won the men athlete of the year award for the 2nd consecutive year, stated I hope that I inspire the entire race. I am just very pleased to make history. I hope it was a significant inspiration to the next generation
Ethiopias world 5,000m silver medallist Selemon Barega was called man climbing celebrity while Ukraines Yaroslava Mahuchikh, that won high jump silver with a world Under-20 listing of 2.04m in Doha, won the female award.
