Paul Casey is hopeful of securing himself a place at the Tokyo area and has set himself the challenge of representing Great Britain at the Olympic Games of the next year.
Even the 42-year-old returns to activity out the cut-off point to the Olympics and at the Porsche European Open as world no 17, with Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose both of him in the world rankings.
Only the top-15 players in the world rankings get to attribute in Japan, with the remaining spots going in countries that don’t have two golfers capable to the highest-ranked players.
“If I create best 15 and don’t make the group, it would probably be the most powerful world ranking for British players ever,” Casey said. “For me, having represented England and Great Britain at amateur level and specialist level, and Europe in Ryder Cups, it’s the one thing I have not really competed in.
“I have done a lot of items in golf haven’t played with an Olympics. Japan would be amazing. It’s the one last thing. Just how many opportunities will I get to perform in an Olympic Games, although I’m 42 and have a lot of years left yet? I will be 43 next year. It’s unlikely that I’d make it.
“I have a lot of other objectives. Among my biggest would be to create the Olympics so each event between now and the cut-off in June – if I don’t win this week I know is still a bit of world ranking factors.
“it is a good goal to have, however, just how do I accomplish that? It is by having an opportunity to win the Rush to Dubai and all the other events or winning Porsche. I’m likely in, if I were to win three or two occasions between now and then. It’s good, as it keeps you focused.”
The appearance in Hamburg of casey is his first European Tour beginning the majors and the World Golf Championship events of the season, outside, together with the Englishman looking to finish the effort strongly.
“This is only one of seven occasions I have left this year,” Casey added. “I took the time off so I have the capability to compete this week and in Wentworth, Italy, Dubai, Japan, China and Australia and anyplace else I’m moving.
“I have not played yet on the European Tour this season. The fact I have begun here, shows that I like this event a good deal. I truly enjoyed last year, so I was keen to return.”
