Melvin Gordon on contract situation: ‘I know my value’

Melvin Gordon reported mandatory minicamp this week, along with the Los Angeles Chargers running hopes the next step in the offseason is a brand new contract.
“I would be lying if I said I didn’t need a deal done,” Gordon said Tuesday, through ESPN’s Eric Williams. “But that is not likely to prevent me from coming out here and doing everything I want to do. We are going to see. I would love to go out there and do it. We’re talking right now, and that’s sort of where I will leave it.”
Gordon eschewed offseason workouts earlier this season. He reported to minicamp this week but would not discount the possibility he might hold out of training camp or even farther into 2019 if a deal isn’t struck.

“I don’t know, man,” Gordon said. “I’m just trying not to talk about it. If it’s going to happen, it’ll happen. As it does, I am pretty sure you guys will know.”
The 26-year-old former first-round choice is slated to earn $5.6 million at the final year of his rookie contract.
Gordon proved his worth to the Chargers after completing the 2018 campaign obviously hindered by knee problems. L.A. wasn’t the same bruising crime with no running back at full capability. Conversely, injuries at this a grinding position are typical, which might lead the Chargers brass to balk at paying a back major dinero. They need only look to their city-mates, the Rams, and Todd Gurley’s situation to potentially get cold feet about paying a running back.
“It is a problem with everybody else,” Gordon said. “However, I know my worth. I know what I bring to this team, and I’m sticking with this. Todd’s paid, so Todd don’t care what anyone says right now — him or David Johnson — they could say what they want to say. They signed the dotted line.
“But unfortunately I haven’t yet, so I’ve got to take the heat for some of the things that they’re going through. But I’m not them, and like I stated, I know my worth ”
There is no question that the Chargers worth Gordon’s playwith. The question is whether monetarily the sides may agree to fair compensation that appeases both parties before the beginning of the season.
