He smacked six sixes in his innings and seven on his second knock, even while Wasim hit all 12 within an unbeaten 257 at Sheikhupura.
Rohit, 32, has an exceptional record as a one time opener that is global but had not been able to replicate that success playing a middle-order batsman in Test cricket.
He had made three years in his past 27 Tests, in an average of 39.62, however in his first start as an opener that he put on 317 for the first wicket with Mayank Agarwal, who produced 215 as India announced on 502-7.
South Africa produced 431 thanks to centuries from Elgar and Quinton Kock, in response, a deficit of 71.
Despite twist on day , Rohit played to reach 127 away 149 balls hitting 10 fours.
His total of runs in the game is the most ever by a batsman in their Test as opener, surpassing Sri Lankas Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made 215 at 2009 contrary to New Zealand at Galle.
Rohit also became the only the next India opener to strike twin hundreds in a game after Sunil Gavaskar, who did it three days, and also the sixth India batsman overall, using Vijay Hazare, Rahul Dravid (twice), Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane also having achieved the effort.
He is also the first India batsman to be stumped in the innings of a Test, each time Keshav Maharaj, never previously been shrouded in his profession.
With the rest of the line-up of India attacking to set up the declaration, the hosts ended beating New Zealands 22, with 27 sixes from the match – the most by one team in a Exam against Pakistan in Sharjah at 2014.
